Phonics & Reading
Subject Leader: Miss Rhodes
Children in Reception and Key Stage 1 follow the synthetic phonics approach, using the 'Read Write Inc' programme. It is an approach to teaching phonics in which individual letters or letter sounds are blended to form groups of letters or sounds, and those groups are then blended to form complete words.
At Mackie Hill we take a rigorous and systematic approach to the teaching of phonics and our daily phonics sessions are fun, involving lots of visual prompts, speaking, listening and active games. There is great emphasis on children's active participation with the teacher modelling how to use phonic knowledge and the children following. They then quickly learn how to use their phonic knowledge for reading and writing activities and in their independent play.
This approach is proving very successful for pupils here at Mackie Hill as we have had excellent results in the recently introduced Year 1 phonics screening test. In 2016 93% of our pupils achieved he required standard which is significantly above the national average of 81%.
We use a combination of reading schemes. These include Oxford Reading Tree, Floppy's Phonics, Ginn and Rigby Star. These give a variety of fiction and non-fiction books to develop children's reading range. Children learn to read at different rates. Once they finish the reading scheme, we encourage them to become 'free readers' and choose their own books.
